One step at a time…

Updated on February 26th, 2025

This week, my Camino training has been at full steam. As I write this, I have just completed my third 15km walk this week am on Saturday I start the 20km stretch.

Each time we have increased the distance, it has meant another step into the unknown. It always makes me feel a little trepidatious to be breaking new ground (for me). I never know what I’ll be facing (although more woods and some country roads seem to be consistent so far!), or how I’ll feel. However, each time I am confident it is within my capability…just!

First time, a little nervous. The task seems daunting.

Second time, familiar and somehow the time always seems to pass much quicker.

Third time, like meeting an old friend!

When once I felt like I was back to my five-year-old self asking, “Are we there yet?” “How much further?” or the family favourite “I tired of norking!” (Can you guess what that was? 😉🤣).

On the third walk, it’s that old familiar spot where I make bad choices and always end up deep in the mud, that field where it is pleasant on the way out but seems to be blowing a freezing gale on the way back, the cut off tree that I think looks like a throne.

But it’s like anything in life that seems challenging, daunting or new. You break the big task into smaller sections. You tackle each systematically one at a time. You make it closer to your end goal with every step.

It’s a lot like planning your first solo travel journey!

It may feel very scary but once you commit to taking that first step, it all becomes so much more doable:

Book and plan the individual elements.

Research to minimise the bits that make you most nervous.

Go and do things for the first time. And then the second, much easier. By the third time it’s hard to believe you ever found it so daunting.

And what’s more, watch this space as I am about to make all this a lot easier for you. Just let me get this long walk out of the way. May is going to be a big month for us!

So, what are the parts of solo travel that you find most daunting and scary? I’d love to know. Hit reply to this email to let me know or connect via your social method of choice (FacebookInstagramTwitterYouTubePinterestThreads or LinkedIn) to give me all the details.

Finally, my favourite tour company, G Adventures have a fantastic sale on right now where you can save 25% on trips taken before 31 August 2024. Access all the details HERE. I went to PeruCosta Rica, the Galapagos Islands and Bolivia with them and loved them all.

And finally, in case you missed it

Until next time,

PS. Finally in case you missed it. I have had some interest but currently nobody has committed, so for one last time:

I am currently booked onto an amazing 8-day long tour of Jordan from 27th September to 4th October through the women’s travel group Wanderful. Unfortunately, I can no longer go, but my place is transferable to anyone (ladies only I’m afraid). I am offering it to anyone who would like to go minus some of the deposit (making a saving for you of £200 or US$250). The final balance is due by 15th June. For all the details CLICK HERE & to register your interest, hit reply to this email to let me know.

🏠 For accommodation, I use Booking.com. They have their Genius loyalty scheme which is easy to progress through the levels for better discounts and inclusions.

🚍  For tours and activities, my preferred supplier is Get Your Guide

🗺️ For multi day or week tours, check out G Adventures. I used them for trips in Costa Rica, Peru, and Galapagos.

🤞 I would never leave home without travel insurance. With Safety Wing you can take out an annual policy and pay monthly. This takes the hassle out of having to remember for us regular travellers.

🛫 For cheap flights, check out Skyscanner or join Jacks Flight Club which scans the internet for error fares (UK only).

🧳 For luggage storage on your travels, I recommend the service by Bounce.
